Third time lucky Dave, after two defeats in this showpiece final are you, confident Corinthians can get the job done?
I really hope so, I can only put the players on the pitch with instruction, I’m sure the boys are hurting still from last year’s defeat, I’m hoping they can use that emotion to play football and get the job done.I cant think about losing three in a row, we haven’t been that successful in cup finals over the last couple of years, we always seem to have luck against us. The boys are fully focused, and determined to win the game, and bring the trophy home finally.
With a lot of top players in the squad how hard is it going to be to select a team this year?
Yeah, really hard. We have a great squad and great players, but unfortunately, the squad is going to have to be trimmed down to 16 on the evening. It’s going to be a tough choice but it’s my job to make it. A couple of the lads who haven’t played so much have given up their place which is very unselfish on a big night. Its always hard letting players down for big games, but that’s part and parcel of managing a football team.
A bit of an up and down season but still a strong showing in the cups, how has the season been for you?
It’s been frustrating, we never seem to get a pre-season in, so the early games in the league is our pre-season. Unfortunately, we slipped up on our 2nd game in, having 13 with 3 injured players, that’s not ideal. We tend to turn it around and do well in the cups, the league is gone, and we didn’t manage to defend our invincible title but I’m proud of the lads for making a third county cup final.
The Vets have flown the flag in the Essex county competitions recently, what’s your thoughts on the Women reaching the semi- final and the First team joining you in a final this season?
This is a competition that would be nice to win, and the club has only won it once before. The Women reaching the semi-final, and the first team getting to the Essex Premier Cup final is a massive achievement, and shows what direction the club is going in. The support throughout the club is great, gives the team a buzz to know everyone is behind them and that they are part of putting the club on the map. I just want to say good luck to Nathan and the team, and I hope they can bring it home.
Finally ,What would it mean to you personally to lift the Essex cup this season ?
It would mean everything to me, the way we lost last season was a very bitter pill to swallow, this would put everything behind us and would be the biggest achievement for me, in my years as Corinthians manager. This is a new finals night and another chance to right the wrongs. I feel the two previous finals have been great games and really showcased the Vets level.
